SMX (Security Matters) PLC, a Nasdaq-listed materials technology company, said it is expanding its Digital Material Passport platform to connect physical plastics with blockchain-based digital records, a move it said could open new markets for verified recycled material.
The company, which trades under the ticker SMX, said the expanded platform builds on technology it uses to embed invisible molecular markers into plastic, allowing the material’s origin, composition and history to be authenticated later in its lifecycle.
Under the new system, that physical identity is linked to a digital record on a blockchain, which SMX said can then be used to support trading of verified materials, digitization of real-world assets, and the issuance of what the company calls Plastic Circularity Credits.
SMX described the process as a five-step chain: material, passport, blockchain, market and credit. The Digital Material Passport, launched earlier this year, records data such as a material’s origin, chain of custody, recycled content and manufacturing history, the company said in a statement.
Alongside the expanded platform, SMX said it is launching a program allowing companies to submit their own plastic for marking and authentication, rather than viewing a general demonstration of the technology.
The company said the program is intended for polymer producers, packaging manufacturers, brands and recyclers to evaluate how the system tracks material from initial marking through verification, blockchain registration and potential resale as a certified asset.
SMX said the Digital Material Passport platform includes dashboards, blockchain-based transaction records, compliance documentation tools and lifecycle tracking from raw material through to reuse.
The platform is built to integrate with existing enterprise and resource-planning software through an application programming interface, the company said.
SMX said its approach differs from other digital product passport systems because the digital record is tied directly to a physical marker embedded in the material, rather than existing solely as separate documentation.
SMX said the expansion comes as economic conditions increase the competitiveness of recycled plastic relative to virgin material.
The company cited factors including energy price volatility, tariffs, inflation and disruptions in petrochemical supply chains, alongside recycled-content mandates and other regulatory measures in various jurisdictions.
The company said it refers to this shift as an “Age of Parity,” in which recycled plastic can compete with virgin plastic on cost rather than solely on environmental grounds.
As the economic value of recycled material rises, verifying that plastic is genuinely recycled becomes more commercially significant, SMX said.
The company said its infrastructure is designed to connect what it described as two markets that have typically operated separately: the physical trade in plastics and digital markets built around data verification and tokenized assets.

The circularity credit component is linked to SMX’s existing Circularity-as-a-Service offering, which the company said is designed to document and certify plastic recovery and reuse.
Verified recycling events recorded through that service could provide supporting evidence for the issuance of circularity credits, SMX said.
