Citibank Kenya to Close Mombasa Branch, Consolidate Operations in Nairobi.

Citibank Kenya to Close Mombasa Branch, Consolidate Operations in Nairobi.

Citibank Kenya will shut its Mombasa branch on Nov. 30 and shift all corporate banking operations to its Nairobi headquarters, the U.S. lender said in a public notice, as part of a wider push to digitize its services in the country.

Citibank said the transition has received all required regulatory approvals and forms part of a broader effort to optimize its network while expanding digital banking access for institutional and corporate clients.

Citibank, N.A. Kenya, commonly known as Citi Kenya, said the closure of its Mombasa branch office would not affect the availability, security or continuity of products and services for existing clients, according to the notice.

“This strategic optimization of our corporate banking network is part of Citi Kenya’s ongoing commitment to modernizing and digitizing banking services and has received all required regulatory approvals,” the bank said in the notice.

The move will leave Citi Kenya with a single physical branch, at its headquarters in Nairobi’s Upper Hill district, ending a presence in the coastal city that dates back decades.

Citi Kenya said clients would retain full access to its institutional banking products through CitiDirect, its digital banking platform, and other electronic channels once the Mombasa branch office shuts down.

The bank said relationship managers and its client service teams would remain available to support corporate and institutional customers through the transition. It added that it remains “a fully present and licensed banking institution” in the Kenyan market.

Citi Kenya directed clients with questions about the branch closure to contact its client service team by email or to reach out directly to their relationship managers, according to the notice.

Citibank has operated in Kenya since 1974 and has run two branches in the country, in Nairobi and Mombasa, serving corporate and institutional clients rather than retail customers. It describes itself as the only bank in Kenya that serves exclusively corporate clients.

Citi Kenya is a branch of Citibank, N.A., a U.S. national banking association that is a subsidiary of Citigroup Inc, the New York-based financial services company. The Kenyan operation also serves as a regional hub for Citi’s East Africa cluster, which spans Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia, according to the bank.

The lender is regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya. Kenyan banks have increasingly consolidated branch networks and shifted resources toward digital platforms in recent years, citing lower operating costs and changing client preferences.

The closure comes as global banks reassess their branch footprints across Africa, weighing the costs of maintaining physical locations against growing demand for digital banking channels among corporate clients.

Citi Kenya’s decision to fold its Mombasa operations into its Nairobi base mirrors similar moves by international lenders elsewhere on the continent in recent years.

Mombasa, Kenya’s second-largest city and a major port on the Indian Ocean coast, remains a hub for trade and logistics businesses that have historically relied on corporate banking services from Nairobi-headquartered lenders with coastal branches.

Citibank Kenya’s most recent quarterly financial disclosures, covering the period ended June 30, 2026, show the bank held total assets of roughly 187.5 billion Kenyan shillings, according to the bank’s published statement of financial position.

The disclosures also list the bank’s loans and advances, customer deposits and capital ratios as of the second quarter, which the bank is required to publish under Central Bank of Kenya reporting rules for licensed commercial banks.

The bank’s statements show its core capital and liquidity ratios above regulatory minimums, according to the disclosures, which are typically published to demonstrate compliance with Central Bank of Kenya prudential requirements.
