Interactive Brokers Group Inc (IBKR.O) said on Thursday it has added trading access to the Bucharest Stock Exchange, opening one of Europe’s best-performing emerging markets to its clients.
The move gives eligible Interactive Brokers clients the ability to trade Romanian equities alongside products from more than 170 other exchanges worldwide through a single platform, the company said in a statement.
Romania’s benchmark BET index hit record highs in 2025 and extended its gains through the first half of 2026, as the country was upgraded to MSCI’s Advanced Frontier Market status, according to Interactive Brokers.
“Adding the Bucharest Stock Exchange expands the choices available to our clients and reinforces our commitment to providing the broadest possible access to global markets,” Interactive Brokers Chief Executive Milan Galik said in the statement.
“Romania is one of Europe’s stronger emerging economies, and we’re pleased to make this market available to our clients through the same platform they use to access exchanges around the world.”
Bucharest Stock Exchange Chief Executive Remus Vulpescu said the exchange had channeled more than 5 billion euros ($5.4 billion) into the Romanian economy over the past 12 months, broadening its roster of listed companies and investor base.
The exchange delivered a total return of more than 80% over that period, the highest among European Union main market indexes, Vulpescu said.
“Every new gateway matters,” Vulpescu said. “Connecting millions of global investors to Bucharest Stock Exchange deepens liquidity, sharpens pricing, and brings Romanian listed companies the international visibility they have earned.”
Clients will be able to trade Romanian stocks through their existing Interactive Brokers accounts across the firm’s mobile, web and desktop platforms, the company said.
Interactive Brokers, a member of the S&P 500 (.SPX), provides trade execution and custody services across stocks, options, futures, currencies and other products in numerous countries and currencies from a single platform, according to the company.
The firm serves individual investors, hedge funds, proprietary trading groups, financial advisors and introducing brokers, it said.
Access to the Bucharest exchange is being rolled out through Interactive Brokers’ affiliates across the markets it serves, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia, the company said.
The expansion comes as international brokerages compete to offer investors broader access to frontier and emerging markets, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, where several bourses have posted strong gains as investors look beyond larger, more established markets.
Romania’s elevation to MSCI’s Advanced Frontier Market category in 2025 marked a milestone for the country’s capital markets, which have sought for years to attract greater foreign investment and boost trading volumes.
The Bucharest Stock Exchange has in recent years pushed to expand its listed company base and improve market infrastructure as part of a broader effort to eventually qualify for emerging market status under global index providers.
The company said further details on the Bucharest Stock Exchange offering were available through its regional websites.
Interactive Brokers has expanded its global exchange network in recent years as part of a strategy to position itself as a single gateway for cross-border investing, adding access to a range of international markets alongside its core U.S. business.
The brokerage, founded four decades ago, has built its business around automated trade execution and technology-driven platforms, and has said it aims to offer clients low-cost access to a broad range of investment products and markets.
Shares of Interactive Brokers Group have traded on Nasdaq under the ticker IBKR.
